Musk may not get his 'free speech' platform after all.
The Department of Homeland Security has announced the formation of the Disinformation Governance Board—charged, according to Politico, with “countering misinformation related to homeland security, focused specifically on irregular migration and Russia.” In a twist too implausible for fiction, the abbreviation is DGB, one letter off from KGB.
The stated goal of combating mis- and disinformation is framed to seem unobjectionable. Who objects to truth and pines for falsehood? DGB experts will guide the way, separating the informational wheat from the disinformational chaff. It is being sold to the American people as something reasonable, and what CNN have called 'common sense' when it is nothing more than a partisan instrument designed to kill dissent.
National Democratic Institute director Moira Whelan claimed the new ‘Disinformation Governance Board’ is merely a government body designed to help people with “law enforcement,” and “emergency services like FEMA” being able to supply “accurate information about human rights abuses.”
But few people believe the narrative. Journalist Glenn Greenwald said "The level of historical ignorance, sheer stupidity and corporate-serving malevolence required to believe the US Security State is trying to *combat* disinformation -- rather than aggressively spread it -- is so extreme that no words in the English language suffice to describe it:"
The incentives are clear. Social Media and independent Media are two huge threats to globalists and authoritarian governments and they are worried, very worried, that they cannot control the narrative any longer. Expect the "Truth experts" to do exactly what Orwell warned: proclaim grave threats around every turn even when any “threats” are minor to nonexistent. The dial will be permanently set to “existential threat.” No one inside the board will have the incentive to dial it down. With everything being an existential threat the Ministry of Truth will then be able to take extraordinary measures in the name of 'safety' to literally erase anything from the internet it doesn't like.
Executive director Nina Jankowicz, who once described Hunter Biden’s laptop as “a Trump campaign product,” has written that America’s “information landscape” includes “declining trust in the media, fed by the Trump administration’s relentless attacks on the fourth estate.” She has said: “Unless we mitigate our own political polarization, our own internal issues, we will continue to be an easy target for any malign actor—Russian or Iranian, foreign or domestic—to manipulate.”
This puts the Biden Administration on a direct collision course with new Twitter owner Elon Musk. After reading about the new department Musk tweeted:
"All's well that's Orwell"
Musk also pointed out that if they have their way, the only information Americans will be allowed to receive will essentially be this:
Coming laws, not just in the US but around the world, will mean that what can and can't be said online will become entirely dictated by Governments, leaving Musk no alternative but to comply.
